The Mechanical Engineering Program is designed to give a thorough qualification in engineering design, manufacturing and assembling of engineering structures as well as arrangement and exploitation of engineering plants and equipment.
The first two years are devised to give a firm foundation in basic theoretical principles (mathematics, physics, computer use, engineering materials) as well as in the appllication of engineering skills (engineering mechanics, machine elements, manufacturing technology). Apart from lectures, auditory, laboratory and design practices are also performed.
During the last two years of study, students may choose, according to their individual interests, one of three areas of concentration: mechanical design engineering, process and power engineering or manufacturing engineering. Moreover, a number of elective courses, allowed by the curriculum, enable students to acquire additional specialized knowledge.
Mechanical Design Engineering Area of Concentration
The mechanical design engineering area of concentration is devised to study the design
of engineering structures and marine power plants.
In order to develop new, original structures or improve the existing ones, a designer is
supposed to take into consideration all requirements a structure is to fulfill and monitor
its manufacture and "life" in service. Being permanently well up on the latest
achievements in science and technology, he is, thus, able to acquire new skills and
experiences necessary for finding ever better and new
solutions.
The computer has contributed very much to the development of new methods and
procedures.
Process and Power Engineering Area of Concentration
The process and power engineering area of concentration is designed to study
transformations of various forms of energy to mechanical energy, mechanical energy
transformations, energy balances making and energy influence on the
environment.
Particular attention is paid to rational exploitation of unrenewed energy resources as well as exploitation of natural energy resources (sun, wind).
Experts in this area are educated to overcome today's energy problems and foresee energy needs in time to come.
Manufacturing Engineering Area of Concentration
The manufactuing engineering area of concentration places particular emphasis on the
design, technology and production management.
Experts in this area are primarily concerned with production processes and production management trying thus to reduce production efforts and costs and increase the profit.
So far, this area has been mainly based on experience whereas today the computer enables the application of objective scientific methods.
