The Faculty of Electrical Engineering was established in the town
of Split by the decree of the Parliament of the Republic of
Croatia in 1960. The center for part-time study of Mechanical
Engineering was also established that year. Out of these two core
institutions the Split Faculty of Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FESB) emerged in
1971 as a part of the University of Split.
From the old edifice, called the "Bishops
Palace", in 1980 FESB moved to the new building, its present
site. More than 3200 students have graduated at the Faculty so
far, and 40 students have acquired their M. Sc. of Ph.D. degrees.
The Faculty comprises seven organizational units: Deans
Office, General Courses Department, Department of Mathematics and
Physics, Department of Power Engineering, Department of
Electronics, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Naval
Architecture, and the Department of Engineering Technology.
Fexb offers the University undergraduate degree programs of
Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, lasting for
nine semesters: eight semesters of courses and one semester for
writing the graduation thesis.
There is also the University undergraduate degree program of
Naval Architecture. The first two years of the program are
offered at FESB, and after that the students continue their
studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval
Architecture in Zagreb, or at the Technical Faculty of the
University of Rijeka.
The FESB also offers graduate M. Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs in
Electrical Engineering, and is in the course of establishing such
programs in Mechanical Engineering.
In the central
FESB building there is one big amphitheater (450 seating places)
and four smaller ones (100 - 120 places each), twelve lecture
rooms, two study rooms, twenty-four laboratories, the computer
center, the library with 13 000 books and 250 titles of
periodicals, 85 professor offices, a restaurant for students and
staff, a coffee shop, and two book-selling and photocopying
stores.
In the immediate vicinity of the Faculty there are big parking
places, and a recreation and sport center with three tennis
courts, two basketball playgrounds, and field-ball and volleyball
playgrounds. All this is situated at the Visoka site, where the
University campus is planned to be built. The laboratories of the
Department of Engineering Technology and the research laboratory
of the Department of Mathematics and Physics are situated in the
Lora site.
The Faculty counts 178 regular employees. Out of this number
the direct participants of the teaching process are: 38
professors and assistant professors, 13 lecturers, 43 assistant
lecturers and professional assistants, and 17 laboratory
technicians. The Faculty also employs 16 junior researchers, who
participate both in teaching and in the research process. If
necessary, professors from other Universities and firms
participate in the teaching process.
The FESB reputation has been contributed by numerous
presentations of research results obtained by professors and
students, both at home and abroad. These research results have
been published in scientific and professional journals, or have
been reported at international scientific and professional
conferences.
The Faculty often organizes home and international conferences,
seminars and public lectures, and during the summer it organizes
the physics school for secondary school students.
These activities, as well as a successful cooperation with
economic organizations, have contributed to the Faculty
reputation. A number of FESB professors have become renowned in
industry, both for their teaching and research work. We must also
point out the contribution of graduate engineers, former students
of this Faculty, who continued cooperating with the Faculty after
getting a job in their particular firms, whether by solving the
respective production problems, or by participating in the
Faculty research work.
